The Henry L. Woodward Fund for The Legal Aid Society of Roanoke Valley
Henry Woodward served as one of Legal Aid's first General Counsels from 1973-2009. His legacy includes: a 1979 class action under the federal Fair Debt Collection Practice Act (FDCPA); a win in the United States Supreme Court on behalf of tenants of public housing in Roanoke who were overcharged for their utilities; the closing of a collection agency that used strong-arm tactics; and a 1995 class action settlement that vacated 346 judgements against consumer victims and returned their payments.
To recognize Henry’s dedication and commitment to helping low-income people with legal issues for 40 years, J. Granger MacFarlane, II and Anne B. MacFarlane created the Henry L. Woodward Fund. The MacFarlanes wanted to generate meaningful unrestricted annual funds to The Legal Aid Society of Roanoke Valley in the form of interest earned from the fund, and hoped other supporters would also make gifts to the Henry L. Woodward Fund at the Community Foundation.
